42 Reasons for #ChurchTourismWeek

24th July 2018

The Churches Conservation Trust has issued an open invitation this week for people of all ages to come and explore the UK’s exceptional architectural heritage in a nationwide celebration of our historic churches, chapels and cathedrals: And we’ve got 42 reasons why you should.

That’s 42 Cathedrals – not including Westminster Abbey and St George’s Chapel in Windsor – for you to step inside and discover fascinating stories of our history and heritage, with shrines to kings, queens and saints, monuments to the great and the good, ancient pilgrim trails, an enviable collection of stained glass – including a pink giraffe in the window at Worcester Cathedral, and art work to inspire.

Manchester Cathedral’s Education Department is taking us back to the sea with a nod to the nearby Manchester Ship Canal by offering a sea-faring craft and explore day for children this Tuesday.

You can meet stonemasons of Salisbury Cathedral for a free stone carving demonstration and discover the secrets of their centuries-old heritage craft.  Plus there’s a graffiti trail round the Cathedral.

There’s a craft and treasure hunt in Guildford Cathedral and there’s a monster trail through Chichester Cathedral.

All these events take place during #ChurchTourismWeek – and beyond – a nationwide celebration of historic churches, chapels and cathedrals.
