Birmingham Cathedral hosts a Big Wheel this Summer
20th May 2024
A big funfair wheel will open in the historic grounds of Birmingham Cathedral this summer offering riders a bird’s eye view of the city and a unique soundscape that invites them to step inside the cathedral too.
Up, up and away … Birmingham Cathedral hosts a big wheel this summer
Cathedral Square Wheel is a partnership between Birmingham Cathedral and Danter Attractions, who operate and hire portable theme park attractions and amusement rides. The Cathedral Square Wheel opens on May 24 until 21 September.
Anna Pitt, CEO at Birmingham Cathedral, said:
“We are constantly striving to offer new and exciting experiences to our visitors, and Cathedral Square Wheel will provide a unique perspective on Birmingham’s skyline.
“We also want to encourage everyone, especially first-time visitors, to step into the cathedral and see our stunning and colourful windows for themselves – looking at their very best following the Divine Beauty conservation work which was completed late last year.
“Our beautiful building and centrally-located green space provide the perfect surroundings for various attractions throughout the year, and we are looking forward to working with our partners at Danter Attractions to bring this venture to life over the summer.”
Riders can soar high above the city – up to 35m high – the height of the Selfridges Birmingham building from 11am to 10pm every day.
The wheel has 24 fully enclosed pods, each capable of accommodating up to 6 people, and will tell the story and culture of Birmingham with commentary provided by historian, broadcaster and writer Carl Chinn which includes an invitation for visitors to follow their ride in the sky by popping into the Cathedral to discover Birmingham Cathedral’s famous Burne Jones stained glass windows for themselves.
Tickets to ride the wheel start at £8 with concessions, family passes and well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the pods too!
