Calm and Wisdom - A Prayer for Brexit

Brexit Vote Prayer
14th January 2019

A prayer for all as the key Brexit vote looms.

Cathedrals have issued a new prayer inviting calm and wisdom ahead of the vote on the Brexit deal in the House of Commons.

The Prime Minister, Theresa May, will make a last-ditch attempt to persuade MPs to back her Brexit deal in a key Commons vote tomorrow (Tuesday 15th January).

The prayer, written by the Dean of Southwark, the Very Revd Andrew Nunn, is inspired by Corinthians 1.25.

Brexit Prayer

God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. (1 Corinthians 1.25)

God of wisdom and strength,
who challenge us in our foolishness,
and support us in our weakness;
give to those who lead us
a desire for that which is best,
a commitment to that which is honourable,
a love for that which is true
and a passion to serve the common good.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

The prayer is available for anyone to use and the Dean of Lichfield, and Chair of the Association of English Cathedrals, the Very Revd Adrian Dorber, today urged people to remember their cathedrals were always open for prayer or quiet reflection in these uncertain times.

He said:

“The outcome of this vote will determine our nation’s future. It seems right therefore to invite people to come and pray in their cathedral, to remember the heavy responsibility on our parliamentarians, and to ask God for wisdom and integrity in our national life”
