Heritage Open Days – Three Cathedrals named in top ten to visit

Three of our cathedrals have been named in the top ten inspirational places to visit over the Heritage Open Days next month.

Wells, Hereford, and Wakefield are all name checked on the Explore Churches website by the National Churches Trust promoting Heritage Open Days this year which are spread over the two weekends of 6-9 Sept and 13-16.

The theme this year is Extraordinary Women and churches have been encouraged to celebrate stories of local women past and present.

A special tour in Wells Cathedral tells the story of some of the extraordinary women who contributed to its history and fabric and visitors get the chance to discover some behind the scene spaces.

In Wakefield, a new trail to discover some of the extraordinary women in its stained glass windows has been designed for families, with themed arts and crafts activities to take home.

And Hereford Cathedral will celebrate its extraordinary women as part of a family fun day too with a chance to see the Violet Plaques which mark the history of suffrage in the city, a trail, themed crafts, and a chance to play the Cathedral piano – back for one day only.
