More than a Building – Lusa, Leicester Cathedral

07th August 2018

The next in our line of More than a Building characters is Lusa, from Leicester Cathedral.

A canon at Leicester Cathedral, priest, Lusa Nsenga-Ngoy, was appointed the first Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Mission and Ministry Enabler for the church in Leicestershire last year.

It is a five year programme working alongside the Bishop of Loughborough, Bishop Guli Francis-Dehqani, to help shape the future culture of the church in that region and to encourage BAME Christians to be more active.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa, Lusa was a researcher for the African Development Information Service, before serving as a priest in Gravesend, Kent, and he came to Leicester Cathedral from Canterbury Cathedral.

Leicester is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country; it is home to 50 different nationalities and can count 38 per cent of its population as Muslim, Hindu or Sikh.

It is this diversity that shapes the life of the Cathedral as a place of welcome and a place for all who seek sanctuary. This summer you can see Arabella Dorman’s installation, Suspended, and there is a summer programme of events, including creative workshops, music and dialogues inspired by this internationally acclaimed artwork as well as a rich programme of organ music.
