Women of the Easter Story at Southwell Minster

15th April 2025

Preparing colourful displays fit for The King and Queen, reflections on contemporary religious art and women in scripture through paintings and poems, and services for Easter and Holy Week on the BBC.

Holy Week and Easter in our Cathedrals

The BBC’s programming for Easter includes Easter Sunday Worship live from Canterbury Cathedral on BBC Radio 4, where the Right Reverend Rose Hudson Wilkin, Bishop of Dover, will preach an Easter message of hope and resurrection.

And there’s a festive Choral Evensong for Easter Day on BBC Radio 3 from Newcastle Cathedral with celebratory music by Howells, Paulus, and Vaughan Williams, sung by the cathedral choir.

Women of the Easter Story at Southwell Minster

The Revd Kate Bottley is returning to Southwell Minster where she was ordained on Palm Sunday to learn how three modern-day Christians have been inspired by the women of the Easter story for the BBC’s Songs of Praise.

BBC 3’s Choral Evensong is live from Southwell Minster on Wednesday 16 April. Watch here.

Kate will meet textile artist Jacqui Parkinson, whose exhibition Threads through the Bible is currently on display there – 10 years in the making, 44 huge panels and 25m stitches.

Threads through the Bible is made up of three huge sequences of Jacqui’s, ‘Threads through Creation’, ’Threads through the Cross’ and ‘Threads through Revelation’ to create display of textile art.

Many of our cathedrals have displayed Jacqui’s work but it is the first time they can be seen as one piece. Threads through the Cross’ will only be on display in Liverpool Cathedral, Southwell Minster and Ely Cathedral this year.

Jacqui will reflect on her work and how she takes inspiration from the unnamed woman who poured perfume on Jesus’ feet during the show. Kate also meets two other women who have taken inspiration from women’s roles in the events surrounding Jesus’ death and resurrection.
