Newcastle Cathedral Yarn Bombed
11th October 2024
Newcastle Cathedral has been yarn bombed- a unique art form that transforms public spaces with colourful knitted and crocheted creations.
The Heaton Hookers have brought the spirit of creativity to the columns, arches, seating and other internal parts of the Cathedral.
Founded in 2022, the Heaton Hookers is a craft group from the East End of Newcastle dedicated to fostering friendships and community through their shared passion for crochet, knitting, and fibre arts.
They were one of the community groups invited to decorate the cathedral’s life-sized model sheep – part of the flock that has made up the Sheep Art Trail that spanned the route of Hadrian’s Wall over the summer– and asked if they could come back to do more.
The results of the yarn bombing can be seen throughout October, including the ‘Illuminated Sheep’ evenings on Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 October.
Newcastle Cathedral is now getting ready to host the whole flock of 30 sheep which will appear as an illuminated artwork by artist Deepa Mann-Kler with a specially commissioned sound track.
Illuminated Sheep is inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels’ themes of light and pilgrimage, and has seen the flock of life-sized sheep lit up in bright colours at some of the region’s most iconic locations.
