Museum of the Moon – Blackburn Cathedral

Photographers from across the country have submitted their images of the moon – part of an exhibition celebrating all things lunar to coincide with the installation of Luke Jerram’s art installation, Museum of the Moon which opened in Blackburn Cathedral this month.

Photographers of all ages and skill levels were invited to enter the free lunar photography competition, attracting hundreds of participants from across the United Kingdom.

The competition was judged by an expert panel that included the artist Luke Jerram, –  Robert William Walsh – Professor of Solar Physics and Academic Lead of UCLan Space, Janet Thomas – Senior Non- Executive member of Blackburn Cathedral’s Dean and Chapter, Graham McLoughlin – Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and member of the Society for the History of Astronomy and Juned Patel – lunar enthusiast and amateur astronomer.

The judges chose two winners, who each won a cash prize, and a shortlist of entries.

These are now on display in the north transept of the cathedral and visitors are invited to vote for their favourite in the People’s Choice Award which will secure a £250 prize.

“Showcasing some wonderful Moon images the exhibition highlights individual creativity whilst also evoking a reaction, sparking curiosity and encouraging reflection on our place in the universe. 

“We were overwhelmed by the response to the competition and the standard of entry has been very high. It has been pleasing to receive entries from all over the United Kingdom but especially from across Lancashire. 

“We are incredibly excited to share the images and fans of both photography and the Moon in general will not be disappointed.”

There is no charge to visit the exhibition during the daytime and is included in the ticket price for all of the events taking place under Luke Jerram’s artwork,Museum of the Moon throughout November.
