Liverpool celebrates its 100th birthday
18th July 2024
July 19, 1924 marks a century since Liverpool Cathedral was consecrated in the presence of King George and Queen Mary – an indication of its significance to the city and its nation.
The People’s Centenary Service: Liverpool celebrates its 100th birthday
And to mark that historic occasion the cathedral is inviting everyone in the city and its communities to join them this Sunday for The People’s Centenary Service.
A new anthem especially for the occasion has been commissioned by renowned composer Will Todd and the service will celebrate the cathedral’s mission of encounter.
The Dean of Liverpool, the Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said:
“For the past 100 years, Liverpool Cathedral has stood as a beacon of spiritual admiration, touching the hearts of generations through countless services. From traditional ceremonies to intimate gatherings and significant events, our sacred space has been a constant source of solace and inspiration for those seeking a connection.
“It has been the backdrop for events that have left a lasting impression on the people of Liverpool, hosting grand celebrations and sombre reflections alike.
“This Sunday we celebrate this Cathedral’s centenary. As a place of Encounter built by the people for the people to the Glory of God we wish to encounter and celebrate with the people of Liverpool.”
The Bishop of Liverpool, The Rt Revd Dr John Perumbalath, said:
“I am looking forward to celebrating the centenary of Liverpool Cathedral with its congregation, our diocese, city and region.
“This is not merely a celebration of past glories, it is a wonderful moment to consider what our cathedral means for so many in the community.
“Our cathedral talks about being for the people and in so many ways it lives this out being there in the city’s moments of joy and sorrow, contributing to our tourism economy and serving those in need through Micah Liverpool.
“It is a spiritual heartbeat of the city and region serving as the mother church of our vibrant diocese as Liverpool Cathedral holds a special place in my heart and it will be great to be part of this magnificent day of celebration”
