Newgate® Cathedral Volunteer of the Year Awards
14th April 2025
Time is running out. Show them some love. Nominate your volunteer of the year.
Nominate teams here or individuals here. It’s quick and easy to do.
Tomb-dusters, broderers, flower-arrangers, stewards, welcomers, cake-makers, tea-servers, gardeners, bee-keepers, tour guides…the list is endless, but without this unsung army of volunteers, our cathedrals would be so much less.
Newgate® Cathedral Volunteer of the Year Awards
To recognise the vital role they play in our cathedral life, we are launching the Newgate® Cathedral Volunteer of the Year Awards, a new partnership project between the Association of English Cathedrals and Newgate® Motoring Solutions Ltd, a company which has long-specialised in affordable motoring schemes for clergy and those who work in cathedrals, or who give their time voluntarily.
There will be two awards – an individual award and a team award – with two cash prizes and a trophy each, as well as monies for the winning cathedrals to host an event to say thank you to all their volunteers.
Each cathedral will be invited to submit up to two nominations only.
Cathedrals can submit their nominations for individuals here.
Or for their volunteer teams here.
The shortlisted volunteers will be showcased throughout National Volunteer Week, with the two winners announced at the end of that week – one individual winner and one volunteer team winner.
Jenny Lewis, a volunteer co-ordinator at Lichfield Cathedral is this year’s chair of the network of Cathedral Volunteer Co-ordinators, looking after volunteer managers in all our cathedrals and she welcomed the awards.
She said,
‘Cathedral volunteers are essential to cathedral-life, being the day-to-day hands and feet that enable the important and varied work of cathedrals.
‘This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the work of our amazing, dedicated volunteers, without whom we couldn’t provide the breadth of services, events and projects that serve our communities and beyond.’
Anna Pitt, interim Executive Director of the Association of English Cathedrals, said:
‘We are grateful for the support of Newgate Motoring Solutions in enabling us to offer these national awards.
‘We can never say thank you enough for all the contributions our volunteers make through their amazing efforts every single day.’
Nigel Williams, founder and owner of Newgate®, said,
‘Volunteers are a vital part of cathedral life, a loyal community of committed and steadfast people, drawn from a wide range of the local community and we are very proud to be able to celebrate and thank them with these national awards.’
Newgate® has been helping stipendiary and non-stipendiary clergy and church workers find affordable car deals – without the need to visit car showrooms – for 25 years, this year.
