Historic Chapter House Reopens
13th October 2021
“The success of this project is the way it draws different people together marvelling at how medieval stones speak to our very modern concerns about nature and caring for creation.”
Dean of Southwell, Nicola Sullivan
Southwell Minster’s historic Chapter House has reopened after a restoration project that has transformed this 13th century gem for future generations and shone new light on its famous stone carvings.
The Leaves of Southwell project saw essential conservation of its internationally renowned stone carvings of leaves, faces and mythical creatures, and a reinterpretation of the space for the 21st century visitor.
The Dean of Southwell, the Very Revd Nicola Sullivan said:
“The success of this project is the way it draws different people together marvelling at how medieval stones speak to our very modern concerns about nature and caring for creation.”
“We are so much looking forward to sharing again our beautiful and inspiring Chapter House with all who visit the Minster, especially celebrating that it is now accessible to everyone.”
The £3.1m project was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Friends of Southwell Cathedral and other generous donors and includes underfloor heating to keep the environment constant and better preserve the ancient stonework and new discreet, hi-tech lighting so the Chapter House is illuminated properly for the first time in its 700-year-old history allowing visitors to be able to see the carvings both day or night.
There’s improved accessibility, a new handrail and a lift, new tactile carvings and interpretation materials, and a children’s trail enabling every visitor, young or old, to be able to better access and experience the medieval sculptures and learn more about the history of the Chapter House of Southwell Minster.
Anne Jenkins, Director Midlands and East, National Lottery Heritage Fund added:
“We are delighted to have supported Southwell Minster with the preservation of Chapter House, with money raised by the National Lottery players. This project has enabled Southwell Minster to safeguard this important local landmark and provide opportunities for people to explore these stories”.
