City of Lights – Carlisle Cathedral

10th January 2020

Our cathedrals are lighting up as part of Year of Cathedrals, Year of Pilgrimage. Carlisle Cathedral presents City of Lights, starting February 12th 2020.

City of Lights – Carlisle Cathedral

In Carlisle, the cathedral is getting ready to be the centrepiece of an exciting line-up of events, displays and installations planned for the first City of Lights project in Carlisle. This four-day event will take place Feb 12 – 15 to celebrate all the city has to offer and shine new light on some of its buildings and local landmarks – literally!

The centre-piece of the City of Lights event will take place in Carlisle Cathedral on the 12, 13 and 14 February when visitors will be taken on a family friendly journey through the cathedral transformed into galaxies, stars, and constellations in ‘The Great Exhibition – SPACE: God, the Universe and Everything,’ inspired by the 1969 Moon landings and created by the Luxmuralis artistic collaboration.

The Very Revd Mark Boyling, Dean of Carlisle said:

“We are thrilled to be a part of the first Carlisle City of Lights event. This exciting project fits exactly with the Chapter’s efforts to open the Cathedral and its precinct in new ways, giving all who come here a different way to engage and experience this sacred space.”

City of Lights will see numerous buildings and local landmarks in the Court Square and Citadels area of the city illuminated with coloured lights and projections. Visitors to the city can pick up a map which will guide them through.

More information on City of Lights is on the Carlisle Cathedral website.
