The Church of England and The First World War

19th February 2014

This year sees the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. To commemorate this, on Thursday 27 February 2014, Southwark Cathedral will host the launch of the reprint of ‘The Church of England and The First World War’ by Canon Alan Wilkinson. This book, first published in 1978, has been described as ‘the leading published work on the subject’ and explores in depth the role of the church during the tragic circumstances of the First World War using biographies, newspapers, magazines, letters, poetry and other sources. Alan Wilkinson will be present at the launch.

This fascinating evening will be held in the Cathedral’s Garry Weston Library. Anyone interested in the War’s centenary, studying the history of the church, or keen to hear about life in the early 20th Century is encouraged to attend. Free tickets for the evening available: email or call 020 7367 6704.
