A Choral Evensong to Remember – Ely Cathedral

06th February 2019

It was a doubly poignant Choral Evensong for Ely Cathedral’s Director of Music, Paul Trepte, when BBC 3 came to record last week.

Firstly the service included music composed by Donald Hunt, former organist at Worcester Cathedral, who died last year and under whom Paul had worked, and secondly this was Paul’s last live broadcast of choral evensong from Ely as he steps down as Director of Music in the Spring.

Said Paul:

“It is always an honour to be invited to host Radio 3’s Choral Evensong which reaches a global audience and is a great ambassador for choral music around the world.”

The music for the service on Wednesday 30 January was performed by the Cathedral Choir consisting of the boy choristers and the lower voices. Edmund Aldhouse, the Assistant Organist, accompanied the Choir on the Cathedral’s famous 1908 Harrison & Harrison organ and Paul conducted.

The service was broadcast live at 3.30pm on BBC Radio 3 and repeated at 4.00pm on Sunday 3rd February.

Today’s live service of Choral Evensong comes from Hereford Cathedral at 3.30pm.
