A Year in the Cathedral Garden
27th June 2023
An entire year of work by the Head Gardener at Southwell Minster, Clare Connely.
Southwell Minster is telling the story of a year in the life of its garden through the eyes of its head gardener, and her faithful companion, the Minster robin.
A Year in the Cathedral Garden documents an entire year in the work of Head Gardener, Claire Connely and was inspired by her Instagram feed where she regularly posts her thoughts and photographs of the garden as she goes about her work.
The book follows Claire’s adventures in and around the Minster and its grounds through the changing seasons of the year and was designed in-house to help raise funds for the Minster and its grounds.
Claire said:
“This past year has been gloriously gorgeous, fabulously fun and fantastically thrilling. I’ve loved capturing my adventures around Southwell Minster’s Grounds and Gardens, sharing seasonal highlights and introducing people to some of my garden pals, like the Palace Garden’s friendly robin.
“It’s been perfectly joyous to show off the Minster’s hidden natural treasures and connect with people from far and wide who love everything green and growing. I hope they’ll come to love this garden as much as I do.”

“Claire’s charming book captures the Cathedral’s stunning gardens through the seasons. It is informative, amusing, and full of anecdotes. We are so proud of Claire’s achievements and the way in which she has inspired a super team of volunteers gardening alongside her, and her trusty confidante, the resident robin!”
