Discover the work of Grinling Gibbons, the most celebrated British woodcarver of the 17th century, through a new exhibition Grinling Gibbons: Monuments to Glory as part of a national programme to mark the 300th anniversary of his death.

The exhibition focuses on three stone monuments that Gibbons produced for the cathedral, of Archbishops Dolben, Lamplugh and Sterne, placing these in the context of his life and wider work.

Gibbons spent part of his early career in York, training in the city before moving to London where, in 1693, he was appointed master sculptor and carver in wood to King William III.
