Wakefield Cathedral Choir Set New Singing Heights

Wakefield Cathedral Choir got a shock this week when they were asked to sing 38,000 feet in the air while on their way home from their choir tour of Poland.

Discovering he’d got a choir on board, the Captain of the Jet2 flight from Krakow back to Manchester asked them to sing.

And with all their music packed safely away in the hold following their five day tour of Poland, all they could do was hurriedly share music on their phones and sing a short burst of the Tantum Ergo and the Amen.

The Canon Precentor, Revd Canon Leah Vasey -Saunders said:

“This is taking the English choral tradition to new heights! It was great to be asked, and a fantastic end to our choir tour.”

During their five day tour, the Cathedral choir of boys, girls and lay clerks found themselves singing an impromptu engagement down a Salt Mine at Wieliczka in the Chapel of St Kinga – 101 metres underground – as well as their organised performances in churches across Poland including taking part in a prestigious music festival – a first for an English choir.

They ended on a high with their flashmob performance aboard the Jet2 flight.
