St George’s Chapel, Windsor
The church where 2018 Royal Weddings between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank took place, St George’s Chapel stands within the walls of Windsor Castle. It is a Royal Peculiar.
A spectacular example of the last flowering of perpendicular architecture, it was built in the 15th Century to be the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter (the highest Order of Chivalry) and the burial place of monarchs. The burials include Henry VIII, Charles I and, from more recent times, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The Quire contains one of the best heraldic displays in the world with stall-plates dating back to the 14th century and the banners of the living Knights of the Garter (including The Queen and The Duke of Cambridge) hanging above their seats. Windsor Castle admission tickets admit to the State Apartments, Queen Mary’s Dolls House, the Drawings Gallery, the Castle Precincts as well as (Mondays to Saturdays) St George’s Chapel. At least three daily services are open to all. The Chapel is open only for Services on Sundays.
